The Phoenix Suns had recently announced that they plan to honor Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner with a No. 42 decal on their home floor at Footprint Center for the remainder of the NBA playoffs.
An Instagram video showed members laying down and applying a decal with her initials and player number. The post was captioned “Front and Center.”
Advocacy for Griner has been subdued as US officials have been navigating a delicate terrain while negotiating with Russia. Supporters have not been vocal about her arrest, worried about making her a pawn in the conflict between the US and Russia over the Ukraine war.
