Today, August 16, trap music pioneer, fashion icon, and gender-bending superstar Young Thug turned 31. Despite not being able to celebrate in his usual fashion due to his pending RICO case, fans and celebrities alike still showed love to the YSL leader on social media.
At the stroke of 12:01 am, Young Thug’s name was automatically trending in celebration of his birthday, with almost every post including “#Free YSL.” Thugger, born Jeffrey Lamar Williams Atkins this day in 1991, was jailed back in May 2022 in Georgia on conspiracy to violate the RICO Act. Subsequently, his bond request was denied by a judge who cited concerns that the YSL leader could be a danger to the community, witnesses, and other people in the indictment.
Many fans of Thug shared their favorite videos of the trap music trailblazer, ranging from the iconic moment he took over the AUX at Kanye’s fashion show to him vibing out to the indie anthem, “Some Nights,” by FUN.
But a birthday is not the only thing that makes this specific day worthy of celebration for Thugger and his fans. Three years ago today, Thug released his project So Much Fun to critical acclaim. The project boasts features by Lil Baby, Travis Scott, Juice Wrld, 21 Savage, Lil Uzi, and current alternative music icon Machine Gun Kelly.
