Rick Ross is not the only Def Jam artist signing rappers these days as his hip-hop rival Young Jeezy has officially inked rap newcomer Freddie Gibbs to Corporate Thugz Entertainment.
Details of the signing landed online over the weekend.
We reported last Monday that Freddie Gibbs was close to signing with Jeezy’s imprint, Corporate Thugz Entertainment, which is owned by Def Jam. And less than a week’s time, that news has been confirmed. The Los Angeles-by-way-of-Gary, Ind. rapper announced his signing to CTE at a concert last night in Chicago. He even brought out Jeezy to, perhaps, make it that much more official. While part of me wants to congratulate Gangsta Gibbs, I’m also extremely nervous. I mean, how long have we been waiting for Jeezy’s latest, TM 103? And does it even have a release date anymore? Time to cross our fingers. (Prefix Mag)
Gibbs also confirmed the deal was complete via his Twitter page.
“Rumor is that I’m about to sign with Kanye West.,” he tweeted before breaking the news on April 10th. “CTE OR NOTHIN.” (Freddie Gibbs’ Twitter)
In late March, speculation of a deal being in the works emerged.
XXLMag.com has learned that 2010 XXLFreshman, Freddie Gibbs, is on the verge of signing to Young Jeezy’s CTE Record label. Rumors broke out months ago that Gibbs was in talks with the imprint, but according to sources close to the deal, the agreement is done. All that is left is the paperwork. Reps for the Gary, Indiana native have yet to return phone calls for comment as of press time. (XXL Mag)
Outside of Gibbs, Jeezy was recently spotted with teen pop star Justin Bieber.
Vulture has previously pointed out how Young Jeezy — whose next album, Thug Motivation 103, is in a state of perma-delay — had his position of reigning gruff-but-charismatic-drug-dealer-rapper usurped by Rick Ross. What can Jeezy do to remedy the situation? Either drop 103 to universal critical and commercial acclaim — or do a song with the possibly omnipotent Justin Bieber. Looks like he’s going the latter route: In a grand coup for his career, Da Snowman was photographed in an L.A. studio with a pre-haircut JB over the weekend, presumably while working on a track. Okay, Jeezy’s back, everyone; go about your business. (NY Mag)
