West Coast rapper YG has shared his thoughts on sneaker companies' recent pursuit of hip-hop's biggest artists.
In a new interview, YG revealed his stance on rap pals like Drake and Future landing their own footwear deals.
“We’re like walking billboards. We let motherfuckers know what’s going on. We have a lot of influence. The brands are giving rappers the shoes because of those reasons, ya feel me? They gonna help the fucking brand make a lot more money. It will make the brand cool and make it look like they know what’s going on out here in the rap world and the streets. They’re buying their cred.” (Complex)
YG also admitted he previously turned down a sneaker deal opportunity.
“Yeah, I had a brand holler at me about getting my own sneaker, but I wasn’t really feeling the sneakers,” YG revealed before weighing in on Kendrick Lamar’s Reebok sneakers. “That was lit. That’s what he preach, so that’s what’s up right there. [Kendrick Lamar] preach that up in his records, so he’s going to do what he keeps doing and bring it to life. I respect that.” (Complex)
Earlier this summer, Future flexed his Reebok partnership after signing an exclusive deal.
