[With the annual WWE Survivor Series pay-per-view event set to go down tonight (November 22), SOHH correspondent Spencer Stein gives a preview of what to expect.]
It might be Survivor Series in name, but the focus on this years pay-per-view event will be far away from the traditional 5-on-5 elimination match. Instead, because of an expected injury to Seth Rollins, the spotlight will be on a few other matches on the card.
While Daniel Bryan’s recent title vacation is fresh in our memories, there have been a series of titles given up over years, mostly due to injury. Rollins was the 10th wrestler to give up the WWE Championship, with the first being Andre the Giant all the way back in 1988. The US Championship has been vacated the most out of any title – a whopping 20 times! Randy Orton is arguably the biggest beneficiary of vacated titles over the years, having won three of his 12 world titles by way of a vacated championship.
The other highlight of this years event is what could be the final act of the Brothers of Destruction. Undertaker and Kane have been naturally tied to each other for almost 20 years. Surprisingly, they’ve wrestled as a team (35 times) more than they’ve faced each other one on one (15 times) and, in terms of win percentage, are one of the more dominant tag teams over that time span. Will this be the final time we see these two together?
