According to reports, the high-action flick’s follow-up will arrive in summer 2016 without Smith.

EXCLUSIVE: Top brass at 20th Century Fox got some work done this week, giving a green light to the long-awaited Independence Day sequel. From what I’m told, Will Smith regrettably isn’t reprising (though if he said yes, I’m sure Fox, Emmerich and Dean Devlin would write him in, in a heartbeat). Deadline revealed this back in February. Check out these additional movie details…

Despite initial speculation, the film will not be a two-part release.

Casting will begin after they lock Emmerich, and I’m told by Fox insiders they will be making a single film. There had been speculation we might see two films shot back-to-back, but Fox only greenlighted one. Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods wrote the script. (Deadline)

Will Smith will make his return to the big screen next year in a flick called Focus.

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for the con artist pic “Focus,” starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Glenn Ficarra and John Requa wrote and directed the film. The movie follows a veteran grifter who takes a young, attractive woman under his wing, but matters get complicated when they become romantically involved. “Focus” bows Feb. 27, 2015. (Variety)

  1. Will Smith is trying to win an Oscar, not going to get it with independence day. He should have already gotten one with pursuit of happiness.
