Food is delicious. There is no debate about that. Food can be both nourishing and comforting but in this day and age, providing sustenance to oneself can come with many unwanted fats and additives. In result, many find losing weight extremely difficult.

SOHH Fashion Correspondent Chant Farrar here and since it’s January, what better time than to get a head start on your summer body? Want to fit in that bikini or have a flat tummy during your stay at the shore? Or simply want to fit in that dress you’ve had in your closet?

Here are five common foods stopping you from losing weight.

1. Processed Meats

Meats can be nutritious and tasty; they provide protein and energy. Meat has been a staple in many meals and because of its high demand, many companies have found ways to “stretch” their resources. Most processed meats have sodium caseinate and sodium erythorbate. Sodium caseinate is a fatty cheese like substance that naturally occurs in most mammals but heavy dosages are added to processed meats as it used as a binder in sausages and bacons. Sodium erythorbate is a chemical dye that when added to meat behaves like a sugar. Extra sugar & extra fat equals extra weight. Processed can be a very vague term so below is a list of meats to avoid.

Sausages

Bacon

Cured meat, corned beef.

Smoked  or dried meat.

2. Margarine

Contrary to many peoples beliefs margarine isn’t a healthy alternative to butter. It’s more so butter’s unhealthier cousin. Margarine contains something called Hydrogenated Oleic Fatty Acid. This can be found in butter and margarine but more specifically in margarine has more than twice the amount. Margarine also contains Soy Lecithin, which is another trans fat with a very complicated phospholipid compound. This is an extremely hard type of trans fat to burn. In plain words, if you are trying to lose weight, avoid margarine.

3.Pastries

Cakes, cookies, donuts, and puff pastries all warm the heart. Some of the best foods are pastries but the danger of these foods is something few care to study. Palm oil and palm stearine are two chemicals found in almost every pastry and contain palmitic and stearic acid. If you guessed, these are also fatty acids that cause weight gain.

4. Alcohol

Rum, Tequila, Vodka, Grain, Gin, Whiskey and Brandy all create a good time for many but have high amounts of calories with no nutritional value whatsoever. So shots and drinks with cutesy names like “Sex on The Beach” may be in good fun but they inevitably add more hours to your workout plan.

5. Ice Cream

Ice cream is an emulsion—a combination of two liquids that don’t normally mix together. Instead, one of the liquids is dispersed throughout the other. In ice cream, liquid particles of fat—called fat globules—are spread throughout a mixture of water, sugar, and ice, along with air bubbles. That’s what ice cream would have been in 1950. Now, ice cream contains multiple types of fat: like polysorbate 80, monoglycerides and diglycerides, carrageenan and cellulose gum, all of which burn at different speeds and do not match each others molecular structure. In the simplest terms, ice cream is an automatic fat adder, no matter what diet you are on.
