Southern rapper Waka Flocka Flame's manager/mother Debra Antney has stepped forward to clear the air on a speculated beef with her son and ex-client Gucci Mane.
In addition to Gucci, Antney shared her issues with music magazine VIBE for publishing Waka’s estranged relationship with the rapper.
“This is what I have to say to VIBE magazine. I am really kind of pissed off at you, for twisting the words up of Waka of the stuff he said,” she said in an interview. “Like he [Waka] don’t mess with Gucci, no he hasn’t spoken to him in a minute. Y’all stop using the s**t of what happened, like Gucci fired me…Things change, people went their separate ways and moved on. That doesn’t’ mean you got a godd*mn beef…Everybody’s cool and alright. I think people need to get their s**t straight. People don’t have anything better to do than run around with this negative s**t, then all you little a**holes get together and join in, like y’all know so much.” (All Hip Hop)
Despite publicly saying he no longer speaks with Gucci in a recent interview, Waka claims business differences have not pushed them to the point of beef.
“I don’t think it’s no split. We couldn’t meet each other on a business level — or a personal level,” Flocka told radio host DJ Drama. “Whatever the level is, I don’t know. I’m going this way and [he’s] going that way and we both killin’ these folk. That’s just what it is…Ain’t no drama. Don’t ever think it’s just like, ‘Ey, let’s get [him]’ … Don’t ever think I’m [going] to ride on him with another person. Let’s make that super clear.” (Hot 107.9)
In the interview with VIBE, Flocka publicly announced his disassociation with rappers Gucci and Nicki Minaj after they terminated his mother as their manager.
“I can say when you start getting hot, there are a lot of people that get in your ear. I call that the devil. It’ll turn you against the people that helped you. They must have just felt like they needed a change. Maybe they felt like other people can take their career somewhere else. I don’t know. Just like LeBron [James] going to the Heat. I ain’t mad, though, or got problems with anybody. Moms is good; her bills are paid…Yeah, [it affected my relationship with Gucci] all the way. All the way. I ain’t got beef or anything but it has changed. We don’t talk anymore. Nicki is still my homey, though. I got her number and can call her whenever. My momma ain’t got no problems with her or anything either. Let’s make that clear.” (VIBE)
Both emcees were often seen together throughout 2009.
Although their relationship appears strained, both rappers have scored major success. 2009 became a banner year for Gucci who scored a slew of high-profile collabos with the likes of Usher and Mariah Carey. Although the MC spent part of the year in jail, his album, The State vs. Radric Davis, yielded hits like “Lemonade” and “Spotlight.” Flocka, who began his hip-hop assent as a member of Gucci’s So Icey team, hit big with the rowdy club anthem, “O Let’s Do It,” which has put the rapper on the map and earned him a “Hottest Breakthrough MC” nomination.
