Roc Nation’s Vic Mensa recently talked about joining rap mogul Jay Z‘s entertainment company and revealed their in-depth pre-signing conversation.
According to Mensa, he met Jay a few times before officially deciding to team with Roc Nation.
“My first meeting with Jay Z, I just knew he was really really smart — that’s what I took from it. We didn’t speak so much in-depth, and I didn’t play music, he just told me what he had going on. So the time I really met with him and played music…I played him a song that hasn’t been released yet called “City On Fire.” And I sampled a song in it, that the refrain is, ’It’s contagious’ and I had just bleached my hair. … And once I played that, Hov told me that the night before, he had been watching the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction of Nirvana. And it was crazy to me that he drew comparison and that parallel just because Nirvana is my favorite band of all time.” (MTV News)
In a post-signing announcement interview, Mensa recently said his Roc Nation release would be called Traffic.
“I’m working on a project called Traffic that’s coming soon. It’s just like stories of my life, like, a lot of my most personal moments, most vulnerable moments. And I’m really excited for the people to hear the music. There’s vibes like ‘U Mad,’ a lot more introspective sh*t. Just a lot of textures. That’s where I’m at right now. That’s all I’m focused on.” (Power 106 FM)
