According to reports, Ertel’s resignation went down hours after shots emerged of him dressed in blackface at a 2005 Halloween party.
“I am submitting my resignation as Florida Secretary of State effective immediately,” Ertel said in an email sent to DeSantis Thursday afternoon, provided by the DeSantis’ office to CNN. “It has been an honor to serve you and the voters of Florida.” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ press office said in an email to CNN that “the governor accepted Secretary Ertel’s resignation.” (CNN)
Reports claim Ertel’s costume showed him dressed up as a Hurricane Katrina victim.
By mid-afternoon, Ertel turned in his resignation, after photos emerged of him posing as a Hurricane Katrina victim in blackface at a private Halloween party 14 years ago, two months after 1,800 people were killed by the massive storm. The photos obtained by the Tallahassee Democrat were shown to the Governor’s Office shortly after noon Thursday. About two hours later it issued a terse statement. (Tallahassee Democrat)
The controversy has sparked some hefty social media reactions and smoke for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

This is who Florida Governor @rondesantisfl appointed as his Secretary of State to oversee elections. Let’s think about that for a minute. His Secretary of State got in blackface, put “Hurricane Katrina Victim” on his shirt, and mocked the pain of Black people for fun. A THOUSAND PEOPLE DIED. TENS OF THOUSANDS OF HOMES AND BUSINESSES WERE LOST….FOREVER. And to this man it’s all a fucking joke. When our man @andrewgillum ran, we always knew that @rondesantisfl was a bigot. He didn’t hide it. Now the man is Governor and is appointing bigots left and right.
