[With the annual B-Boy Royale 2 going down tonight (August 22) in New York City, host and respected hip-hop artist MC Jin talks to SOHH about what advice he has for aspiring b-boys.]
Of course you can’t count out the importance of the technical aspect which is where the judges come in.
When I say the technical aspect, I’m talking about whether it’s the footwork, the control, I’m sure there’s a bunch of other technical terms that I don’t even know. So speaking as a fan, I know there’s a lot of focus and attention on those things like control.
When you are doing a move, it’s either one you have mastered or not, so I think it’s that.
For me, more as a pure fan’s standpoint, I think if you can win the crowd over [you’ll be great.] What I mean by that is how entertaining are you?
Whether it’s winning the crowd over or the judges, I think one thing they’re looking for is creativity, uniqueness, they’re looking for something they haven’t seen before.
It’s tough.
Whether you’re an emcee, b-boy or deejay, and you’re in this kind of position, it’s kind of like reinventing the wheel.
How do you reinvent the wheel? You can’t, it’s already there already. You can’t.
You just have to have your own personality to it, you gotta inject your own style, your own character traits. Whether you’re b-boying or rhyming, you can do the fancy stuff, but it all boils down to, “I see something in this b-boy that I haven’t seen in anybody else.”
It’s tough but I think true talent shines and a unique personality. What you bring to the table, it always shines through as well.
Just to have fun as well. That’s my biggest insight. As much as it is a competition and there’s a prize and title, I think the guys going in to have fun, those will be the ones that shine.
