SZA, who recently surpassed Beyoncè with her #1 album, SOS, got candid with PEOPLE magazine where she shares that she was bullied during high school.

The Grammy Award-winner told PEOPLE, “I was bullied because I wasn’t quiet and I was awkward at the same time. I wasn’t this tiny sad victim, but I was more so attacked just because it was giving ‘What is wrong with you?’ energy.”

SZA, who is also now rubbing elbows with her favorite artists since childhood, added that the experience caused her to feel as if she “would never have the approval of anyone in life.” However, looking back, the 33-year-old singer says the bullying truly shaped her into the star that she is today and “wouldn’t take it back.”

Additionally, the “Kill Bill” singer says she also discovered that the things that made her feel “lame” made her who she is. She also offered encouraging words to young girls who could be dealing with similar harsh experiences:

“Everyone who experiences bullying, that just sucks, but it’s going to lead you to something, it has to,” the “Low” singer says. “If you could hold on and just wait until high school is over because 10 years from now, I promise you, none of those people will matter.”

SZA continues to put her bullies to shame as she climbs the Billboard Charts and gears up for her highly-anticipated SOS tour.
