[Busy touring the world with Joey Bada$$ and Pro Era, music producer Statik Selektah recently talked to SOHH about everything from his favorite collaborations to what hip-hop acts he still wants to work with.]
Lyrical cats vs those like French Montana?
Ha. But that’s like pop at this point. When I think of the word “hip-hop,” I think of the culture behind it, the people that are really into it. People who are into French [Montana], and egos and all that sh*t, that’s just turn up music like when people go to a party, get drunk, party to it and go home. That’s not changing nobody’s life.
People that you work with time and time again – Action Bronson, Freddie Gibbs, Talib. Who do you particularly click with and enjoy working with in the studio? Name some of your favorites.
Obviously Action [Bronson], Bun B, Styles P, you said Talib [Kweli], MOP, Lil Fame’s a really good friend of mine so I have to make sure he’s on everything I do, obviously my Showoff Crew. Those are just like all the homies that I make sure I get on.
Anyone you really still want to work with?
Obviously Jay Z. I want to work with Scarface but we keep having weird communication. But we talk once in a while. He was supposed to be on the last album, it didn’t work out in time. He actually spit me his verse and everything. I want to work more with [Eminem], I want to work more with Nas. I want to work with 50 [Cent].
