5. The Philadelphia Situation Is Creating A Change In Company Policy
On April 17th, Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson made a public statement and timidly admitted that the company needs better training. He further announced that on May 29th, 8,000 US stores will be closed, with the day being dedicated to racial bias education. This will reach about 175,000 employees, with the hope that history won’t repeat itself. Johnson said, “Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.” Former CEO Howard Schultz, who resigned last year to become executive chairman, didn’t hold back when discussing what happened. He preached of the training day as a necessity and claimed that the cops wouldn’t have been called if the involved parties were Caucasian, and finished off his remarks by saying “That’s not who Starbucks is”.
