In March, a California judge ruled that coffee companies such as Starbucks are required to issue labels on their products that warn of potential cancer-causing chemicals. The specific chemical involved is acrylamide, which is a carcinogen byproduct of roasted coffee beans. It is often found in brewed coffee, yet the company declined to comment or address the issue. This has led to the California judge’s new declaration, which states that upon the completion of the trial’s first phase, Starbucks might be subject to civil penalties that involve paying affected customers (over the last 8 years) $2,500 each.
