As box office hit Django Unchained continues to build mixed reactions over its ample usage of the N-word, renowned activist Dick Gregory has weighed in on the discussion.

The 80 year-old author analyzed Quentin Tarantino‘s latest film and slammed moviemaker Spike Lee for publicly attacking Django Unchained without having watched it.

“I’ve seen Django Unchained, I’ve seen that 12 times. Never in the history of Hollywood, have they ever made anything that freed the inside of me. The inside. I’m 80 years-old, I saw cowboy movies, wasn’t no Black folks in cowboy movies. I’m looking at a Western, plus a love story. To those of you all that see it, you’ll never see a love story about a Black man and a Black woman where it wasn’t some foul sex and foul language, huh. And Spike Lee can’t appreciate that. That little thug ain’t even seen the movie, he’s acting like he’s White.” (We All Be TV)

Gregory also questioned Lee’s own flicks and representations of African Americans.

“So it must be something personal because when I look and all them Black entertainers that know Spike Lee, how you gone attack this man and don’t be attacking them? Are you saying everyone’s a fool but me? ‘Well, it offended my ancestors,’ but when you did She’s Got To Have It and some of those other thug movies you did, you took Malcolm X and put a Zoot suit on him — did that offend your ancestors, punk? It’s a game, man. So whatever he’s mad about is something that happened way, way, a long time ago. Thank God it didn’t work, that movie’s made close to $200 million, huh?” (We All Be TV)

Recently, outspoken Chicago rapper Rhymefest hit up SOHH and shared his stance on the Django controversy, especially with Lee blasting Tarantino’s new flick.

“I think that sometimes you got to know when you’ve won. And I think Spike Lee won but he’s ruining his win. Now he’s putting himself in a position where he’s going to have to win again. Furthermore, make some good a** movies and show “us” how it’s done. I’m going to tell you something. I don’t think black filmmakers can make good movies about slavery. I don’t think it’s possible. I think we’re too close to it. You can [quote me]. A lot of people are going to hate that. Some subjects, as black people, we get so emotional about things that we don’t think about the artistic entertainment value of it as well as the historic accuracy of it.” (SOHH Guest Star)

G-Unit’s 50 Cent recently revealed his take toward the movie’s buzz and Lee’s publicized issues.

“The Django movie, I went to go see it at the premiere, I actually saw it before it came out,” Fif said in an interview with DJ Whoo Kid. “My take on it is, it was done in the f*cking time where the word was around. I guess [Spike Lee’s] upset, man, sometimes he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed and you already got an attitude. You woke up on the wrong side of the bed, saw the f*cking movie out there, Django, and then said, ‘How many times did they say ‘N*gger?” and got mad as a motherf*cker, man. Spike wants to kill somebody. They got to relax him. Relax him and let him watch the game, man. Watch the Knicks.” (Whoolywood Shuffle)
