Atlanta rapper Soulja Boy Tell Em is still contemplating joining Baby's Cash Money Records but said his contractual obligations to Interscope Records thwarts the union between the two.
Although he admires the Cash Money Records establishment, Soulja Boy said a deal would have to wait.
“I met with Baby and Slim down in Miami,” Soulja said in an interview. “He’s trying to get me to come over to Cash Money…I still got paperwork with Interscope Records, so I’m just trying to figure out what I’ma do. I got a lot of great options on the table — I’ve been a fan of Cash Money since I was young. I’ve been listening to Birdman’s music since I was growing up. I would have never thought.” (Rap-Up)
Last week, Soulja Boy broke the news of Baby’s interest in him.
“If I could get anybody, I would have probably put Lil Wayne on my mixtape. Me and Wayne, man. I talk to him, but I’m cool with Birdman. When I’m in Miami I be with Birdman. He’s trying to get me to come over to Cash Money. I’m cool with Birdman. I feel like if I drop my mixtape and get Wayne on it, I’d really have the juice then [Laughs]. It is a possibility. When I was down in Miami for a couple of weeks recording with Sean Kingston, Birdman reached out to me. He said ‘come and have a meeting with me’ and he told me ‘yo man you’d go perfect with everything we got going on. Whatever you want. I want to bring you over to this family, bring you to Cash Money.'” (VIBE)
The rapper recently blamed Interscope for hurting his latest album’s potential first-week record sales.
“Honestly, I shut down for a week [after my album dropped]. I wasn’t talking to nobody, I wasn’t talking to management, and I wasn’t talking to the label,” Soulja explained in an interview. “I wasn’t picking up nobody’s calls. I went like that for a week. I was in a state of confusion. I needed answers. I was doing this concert in Hawaii for my fans and then I was in Hawaii for a week. I wouldn’t have been able to go platinum first week anyway, because the label only shipped like 18,000 copies. So I wasn’t able to do gold first week or even 100k, none of that. They only put like 8,000 units in Best Buy. It was crazy. I didn’t know all of that though. I was just going off of, ‘My album’s going to be in stores, so I’m going to promote it as much as I can.’ I’m not the type of person to just be out like, ‘Hey, my label did this and I was in a situation with that.’ But I don’t want to get caught up in record-label-artist drama or nothing like that. I just want to keep everything cool to make music, that’s all.” (Complex)
Last November, Soulja Boy’s The DeAndre Way sold just over 13,000 copies in its first-week.
Rapper Soulja Boy Tell Em’s The DeAndre Way also debuted on the chart at No. 90. With seven days down, the rapper’s new album has sold 13,400 copies. (SOHH Sales Wrap)
