Teen rap sensation Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em recently addressed his lower-than-expected sophomore album sales citing his ringtones sales as a measure of his relevancy.
Speaking with hip-hop personality Angela Yee, the rapper admitted to not expecting his second project, iSouljaBoyTell.com, to sell the way it did upon hitting stores last winter with under 50,000 in its first week.
“It really was [disappointing],” he said in the interview. “My album is turning around now, like, usually, after you have an album that doesn’t do so well, it usually just straight declines, you know what I’m saying? But not mine, my album sales are going up as my single ‘Kiss Me Through The Phone’ is risen up. But I got the number one ringtone in the country right now…I love those ringtones. If the album doesn’t work out, the ringtones will. And that’s the thing about the game that I got on lock…” (Angela Yee)
Prior to the album’s release, Soulja Boy spoke with SOHH about his latest project offering more lyricism than his debut.
“I started hopping on songs with like Juelz Santana and Gucci [Mane] and all these different artists and you know they on the verses just killing me,” he said. “I’m like, ‘Oh I gotta come wit it.’…Basically, my flow just got stupid, I just started enhancing more and more every time I went into the studio,” he said. “So basically every track my flow is just on. I’m just riding the whole beat perfectly.” (SOHH)
Along with his sophomore album, the rapper also released his own online cartoon series.
Interscope Records will help launch the Southern rapper’s online series with three webisodes set to offer a fusion of animation and live action. While details are still scarce, the project’s plot will revolve around an animated version of Soulja Boy as he makes his return to high school. Alfonso Ribiero, most notable as “Carlton Banks” from “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” will portray the cartoon’s principal. (Hollywood Reporter)
Soulja Boy’s rise to fame came at the hands of mega producer Mr. Collipark.
He was discovered by Atlanta producer Mr. Collipark who helped launch Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em from a local sensation to a national mover and shaker, and it was all largely due to the Internet. His MySpace page broke the site’s records and generated millions of views. Affiliated with Interscope via Collipark’s Collipark Music imprint, Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em gradually rose to number one on the pop charts with his snap-dance hit single “Crank Dat (Soulja Boy)” in 2007.
