[With his new “Fire & Brimstone 2” album continuing to blaze across the ‘net, Detroit’s own JP One exclusively premieres his must-see “What Will I Do” music video on SOHH and breaks down how it came together.]

I worked with Brandon Hughes and I usually come up with most of my concepts but we usually bounce ideas back and forth and I told him, “This time, I kind of want to do this and a little bit of that,” and he sent me back a full sheet of what we needed and we went and did it.

We went and knocked it out.

In Detroit I have the privilege of being one of the elite lyricists here which doesn’t equate to being one of the biggest artists in Detroit. The bigger artists here are the ones that are featured on my “Fire & Brimstone 2” album like Guilty Simpson, Elzhi, Black Milk, those are the bigger artists from Detroit that you would be familiar with.

But they’re not the biggest artists here. The biggest artists here are the ones that can’t rap. So when I say being one of the elite, I mean being one of the top lyricists and not top artists.

If you come to Detroit and say, “Well who is one of the best rappers that you’d listen to,” you might be like, “This is what you have to offer?” I’m one of the elite and the people who know that will tell you and I’ve only been out for four years and I’m getting the type of recognition that people who have been out here for fourteen, fifteen years haven’t gotten yet. So the video is a reflection of all the people in my face saying, “Congratulations, you’re doing your thing,” but really behind my back they’re saying, “Eff that n*gga.”

That’s what the whole situation was about the video saying, “You’re trying to do what I’m doing but you’re not that good at it. You’re halfway doing it but you’re mad at me,” instead of saying, “Okay, let me get a little game from you.”

That’s what the whole video and song is about. It’s about everybody turning their nose up instead of taking out a pen and paper and taking notes.

  1. Love that detroit motown sound. Wish slum village would reunite though, elzhi is a beast.

    • Thanks a lot… He’s on the project and we got it in. Just check out my site and I know you will love the project.

    • Thanks for checking it out, but this song was more style than substance. You should check the full project out and then make judgment. “Hate Me Now” or “Big Pimpin'” wouldn’t make Nas or Jay great. I have a very lengthy catalog.

      • I agree 100% My G… #Respect… But let me check that catalog out and you sounding like Big Sean… I’m coming find you .. lol.. ?

        • All the time. Big Sean do his thing, but I can really go, Fam. The hardest part these days is getting people to press play and listen, because EVERYBODY RAPS. My website is up up there. Just check out the Fire & Brimstone 2 project. I guarantee you respect the flow.
