[Skyzoo recently sat down with hip-hop personality and SOHH Correspondent Shawn Setaro on his popular “The Cipher”podcast. Listen to the full interview and check out five gems Sky dropped during the Q&A.]

On storytelling in rap:

“I’ve always said there were two types of storytellers. You got your Nas type of storyteller, where it’s narrative. It would always be person/place/thing, who/what/when/where/why, and that’s great. And then you got your Jay Z storytellers, where people don’t really look at Jay Z as a storyteller, but he definitely was. Even ‘Hard Knock Life,’ it was a huge radio record, but he was telling a story on it. He was a storyteller, but he doesn’t get looked at that way because there never was a narrative. He just spoke about all these moments and events in his life.”

On the concept behind his newest album:

Music For My Friends is about being 13, 14 years old, and how you grow up and things around you that influence you. The things that happen to you or happen around you when you’re that age impact you forever. That’s the most critical point. Your body’s changing, your voice is changing, you’re becoming all these different things. You’re on your way to being an adult, but you’ve still got a curfew.”

On music biz shadiness:

“When you come from where I’m from, everything is say what you mean, mean what you say, period, no matter what. And then when you get into the music industry, it’s a lot of the opposite. It’s a lot of going back on your word. As someone who grew up the way I did, I had to see that early on and adapt in a way where I’d understand what that is.”

On his relationship to the Jehovah’s Witnesses:

“I believe in that more than I believe in anything else, as far as spiritual walks of life. But I’m nowhere near being 100% that guy. I don’t even have the privilege of being able to say I’m 100%, hardcore J-Dub and I walk that way of life, because that’s a serious path and dedication. I don’t deserve the privilege of being able to say that yet. I just do what I do.”

On his reaction upon finding out that Sean Price had passed:

“I called Dru Ha and I called the crib. I couldn’t catch anybody because there was so much going on. But I was just broken.”
