[After recently dropping his Agua album, rap veteran Sadat X takes a break from the promotional run and talks to SOHH about keeping in shape at 40-plus.]

In this game, for me to have lasted this long, I’m still a fan. I’m still a fan of rap and a fan of certain rappers.

I’m a fan of Rakim and any time I get a chance to do anything with guys like him, I take it. It’s always an honor to link with Rakim.

Being that I’m not a mainstream artist, I can’t afford to get on stage and not give 100 percent and not come out 100 percent. I have to do it.

I might not do it with the sales but I’ll give you a good show. I won’t rhyme over the lyrics and I’m on top of every song. I look at some of these artists, especially as they get older, sometimes they don’t get into shape and they’re not able to continue.

Then I’m looking at some of the young boys that are letting themselves get out of shape too early. That’s where your craft it built. It starts with being able to do good shows and in order to do good shows, you have to be in shape and your body has to be in good shape too.

You have to have stamina and energy. You want to look right. You don’t want to get on-stage and look beat up. It’s good mentally.

I tell people, “Anything that you want has to come with discipline.” Sure there’s some days you need a day off but just make it back up.

Some mornings I don’t want to get up and go to the gym but I do it because I see the results of it. I tell people, especially with the gym, “It’s going to take a while. It’s not going to be a two-week process.” Your body has to get used to it and accumulated to certain things and eating right. You have to get caught up to rest too. It all adds up.

I go to Japan and Germany and I don’t have a hype man. So I have to maintain my energy from the first song to the last song. I’m not rhyming over the words so I have to be physically and mentally on point.
