Roc Nation star Sean Garrett is known for his writing skills, however, the songwriter is now making headlines for having a debt of over $730,000 exposed.
According to reports, the singer/rapper owes taxes dating back to 2006.
Hip-hop mega-producer Sean Garrett has worked with the biggest names in the business, but for the foreseeable future, a portion of every dollar ?he makes will go straight to the biggest name of all … UNCLE SAM. According to docs filed by the Georgia Department of Revenue, Garrett owes back taxes for the years 2006 and 2007 to the tune of $732,553.57. So the government is tired of waiting for their cash, they ordered BMI, which collects royalties for artists, to hold all money Garrett makes and turn it over to them. (TMZ)
Back in 2010, Garrett hit up SOHH to discuss potentially joining Cash Money Records.
“We got about four or five other deals on the table right now,” Garrett told SOHH about his pending deal with Cash Money Records. “The negotiations is getting real heavy but you know, that’s my home team, that’s where I want to be so we’re just gonna have to make it work. There’s a few things that we’re still going back and forth on but everything is looking really good and that’s family regardless. I got so much love for them. Me and Tyga were just on ‘106 & Park’ … That’d be really really dope to be there with Cool & Dre. I’ve known them for a while, Cool & Dre. They’re real cool people. I’m like a chameleon, Sean Garrett, I f*ck with everybody. I’m not a person that’s hard to deal with. Even though I’ve been so successful, everybody knows how humble I am, I just do what I do.” (SOHH)
Garrett previously shared his admiration for Cash Money Records’ co-founder Baby’s label.
“I really got a lot of respect for [Lil] Wayne,” Sean said in an interview. “Wayne embraced me with open arms before he went on a little vacation. He took me on tour with him. He was really open arms about rocking with him. He put me on the pilot seat going on right before him. I got a lot of respect for [Cash Money], because it represents where music is going as far as really believing in yourself and not just being in a box. Just creating your own style, your own movement and believing in your team. Cash Money is really family-orientated. I can bring a lot to Cash Money, in reference to what I do, developing their other artists, helping them to travel across the water. They’ve got artists they are trying to break internationally. It’s sort of a win/win situation.” (MTV)
Despite his admiration, Garrett later went on to ink a deal with Jay-Z‘s Roc Nation.
“I’m so misunderstood when it comes to the music man,” Garrett told VIBE less than 24 hours after announcing his signing to Roc Nation/Columbia. “I’m not afraid to say that I’m a true genius with my craft. This isn’t something I do for the money…I think I’m the modern-day Lionel Richie. I just want my fans to really know who I am and get to know me from the inside and out. You’ll be seeing a lot more of me on your TV–not just in music videos. Right now, it’s time to open myself up to the world…Roc Nation understands that my movement is way bigger than just my deal. The only thing that I could have asked for is an opportunity, and that’s what I was blessed with. Jay’s building a new Dynasty and it feels like family to me.
