Roc Nation’s Rita Ora has stepped up to address being singled out in rap star A$AP Rocky‘s “Better Things” song off his A.L.L.A. album.
Instead of harping on the issue, Rita downplayed its seriousness.
“I’m not looking at it like ‘you’re upsetting me’ because I don’t actually give a sh*t. I think about it, and I don’t want people to think it’s okay to speak about women like that. I don’t care what you say about me. I don’t give a flying f*ck. That’s just how it is, but you know got to keep it moving. I’m very happy with what I do, and I’m proud of who I am, and what I represent.” (Hot 97)
Although apologetic for the rhymes’ harshness, Rocky recently stood behind his explicit lines.
“The Rita thing was tasteless of me,” he admits today. “[But] I’ve got to stand by it, because I did it. I said it.” Still, it remains beyond him why people care about it: “Who gives a fuck about who I’m f*cking? Nobody really cares. It’s fun to hear, but who really gives a f*ck about who Rita Ora’s f*cking?” (The Guardian)
Despite generating a ton of attention, Rocky said he wished the hype would die down in a May interview.
“People are joking on her. The joke is already a ha ha with the lyrics. Leave it alone. No big deal ’cause in all reality, she’s not the only pop singer getting jizzed on. That’s life. I don’t kiss and tell. I’m not the first rap guy she’s been with and she’s not the first pop broad. This is so long ago. We didn’t date, we didn’t never.” (Hot 97)
Rocky’s lyrics sparked some controversy for name-dropping Rita on “Better Things.”
