Today, United States President Barack Obama once again made history by signing the landmark health care bill into law. In honor of this achievement, SOHH reflects on Raekwon, Kid Cudi and Juvenile's comments about the importance of health care reform.
The “Chef” explained how vital it is to have medical insurance.
“You know anything far as me, I always had health care benefits when you a rapper or whatever,” Raekwon told SOHH. “But a lot of times we dealt with it with cash. We them kinda dudes ‘Yo, how much, put it on the table.’ You know what I mean? That’s ill that this conversation came up because, you know, I had to get a good plan, you know what I mean? Because at the end of the day, you wanna make sure when you’re getting older you stay healthy and do the right thing for your body. And definitely, I was thinking about going to a city that carries free health care and put my moms there because she’s getting older and she has to get in that frame of mind too to know what it really is to be all right. If you see your moms getting older and her body getting weaker, you thinking of them. We still on some rebel sh*t, you know what I mean? We feel like, boom, knock a little cold out whatever, whatever. But it’s important to have them things and far as rap is concerned, I never took advantage of them situations, knock on wood I haven’t got sick or fell out or had to utilize that, you know, I had a few scares though but it was more less family scares, you see your moms or your girl going through something, automatically, you want them to be covered. And that’s a must right there. For me, I have a little policy but I’m working on getting a bigger one. [laughs] And writing a will out too.” (SOHH)
Cudi told SOHH he became insured through the Screen Actors Guild last year.
“I just got health insurance through SAG, because I’m a member of SAG through the HBO show,” Cudi revealed. “So I definitely got really excited because I was one of those people coming up where you had to let go and just ride out. I had no money to go to the doctor, it was hard for me to get medicine and stuff like that. At this day and age, everything is kinda like bugged out and messed up, you know with the recession [because it] is still very much [here] so I really don’t have any strong beliefs on that stuff, really.” (SOHH)
According to Juvie, admitted to not being up-to-date on the health care debate.
“Nah, I don’t have health care,” Juvenile revealed. “I think it’s needed for a lot of people. I’m really not up on the politics of health care and what’s going on. But I think, whatever it is, a lot of people really need help on health care, especially senior citizens and those who are unable to pay. There were a lot of promises made to a lot of those people so I’m just hoping they come up with a plan or a bill and make sure it’s effective quick enough to help the people out that are struggling ’cause you know, that’s a major problem…Yeah, you go [to the doctor] and they send a bill to you and that’s basically it.” (SOHH)
President Obama signed the health care overhaul bill into law today.
With the stroke of President Obama’s pen, his health care overhaul — the most sweeping social legislation enacted in decades — became law on Tuesday. Mr. Obama affixed his curlicue signature, almost letter by letter, to the measure, the Affordable Health Care for America Act, during a ceremony in the East Room of the White House, surrounded by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reidand a raft of other lawmakers who spent the past year on a legislative roller-coaster ride trying to pass it. Aides said he would pass out the 20 pens he used as mementoes. (New York Times)
