Takeoff’s Memory Continues

In a candid and emotional interview with former football player and journalist Shannon Sharp, former Migos group member Quavo revealed how he has been coping with the sudden passing of his group mate, Takeoff. The tragedy struck in November 2022 at a Houston bowling alley, leaving Quavo and the music world in shock.

When asked about life now and how he finds his “rocket power,” Quavo shared that he seeks solace in familiar spaces. “When I go home or just kick it, chill, watch TV. Go down there in the basement – like that basement, when we get our ideas down there, I feel like that’s the spot where we execute our plans. We always talk about the basement,” he said, reflecting on the creative sanctuary where the group had found inspiration.

Dealing With Grief

Grief can be a challenging emotion to navigate, and Quavo acknowledged that he has isolated himself at times to cope. Being in the presence of others may not always provide the comfort or understanding he needs during moments of vulnerability. “Sometimes being around people, you don’t really kinda know. Especially in a space where you’re kind of like down or feeling vulnerable. You don’t know if they’re still trying to keep you there or uplift you,” he explained.

Despite the pain of Takeoff’s absence, Quavo revealed that he still feels his presence. “I hear him. I hear him, I always smile because that’s stuff that we talk about,” he said, reminiscing about the cherished moments they shared. Quavo recalled being at a game and longing for Takeoff’s presence when their song “Hotel Lobby” began playing, providing a poignant reminder of his late friend.

Quavo stated, “ I was like “Man I wish this man was here.” As soon as I said that— I swear, I’m not playing— I didn’t even want to look at Brian cause he came and sat in on the bench and I was like “I’m just going to keep my eyes straight, I’m not going to look at him. But I had my glasses on so I did look there but I kept my face straight and when he cut his eyes at me “Hotel Lobby ” came right on. The song played and I just rubbed my chest and just watched the game.”

Throughout the interview, Quavo demonstrated strength in facing adversity and honoring Takeoff’s memory. He opened up about his mental and emotional health, showcasing vulnerability in his journey through life at a time of hardship.

The interview comes eight months after Takeoff’s untimely passing, and Quavo’s resilience shines through as he continues to move forward. He is set to pay tribute to his fallen friend with his upcoming album, aptly titled “Rocket Power.”
