G.O.O.D. Music president Pusha T has stepped forward to speak out on landing the big job at rap star Kanye West‘s label and what sparked the idea.

According to Pusha, Kanye presented him with the idea of running G.O.O.D. earlier this year.

“It was probably six months or so ago. I was getting off of a plane landing home and he basically just asked me you know, “How do you feel about being the president of G.O.O.D. Music?” He was like, “I feel like you’re of the culture, I feel like you stay on top of everything that’s going on in the online community, and you’re just really a tough critic.” (Rolling Stone)

Pusha also spoke out on what inspired him to sign to G.O.O.D. five years ago.

“You know I felt like when I got with Kanye and we discussed me being on G.O.O.D. Music, he just really took me to a place in regards to music that I love and music that I had made previously. We had a clear understanding of what I wanted to make and he just seemed like he was an advocate for hardcore, uncompromising hip-hop. It wasn’t even a second thought. It as the only thing we ever discussed.” (Rolling Stone)

Last month, PT updated fans on his King Push album status and spoke on the importance of artistic integrity at G.O.O.D. Music.

“We gonna get this King Push album out, first and foremost. I feel like we just gonna start there and just, at the end of the day, it’s just about keeping the high level of quality and productivity and high art level of music and artistry that G.O.O.D. Music is known for,” Pusha explained. “I’m rocking with [President Barack] Obama. Do you see what he is doing with these drug laws and all this? And he’s on his way out, but we getting all these different drug laws remixed. And sort of fixing like the Rockefeller drug laws. And just fixing all of those things that were set in place during the Bush-Reagan era.” (Mass Appeal)

The Virginia native recently spoke on his new position at G.O.O.D. Music.

“I take my time, music isn’t a pressure thing for me, it never has been,” he said, explaining that his other enterprises—like his work with adidas—have afforded him the time he needs. “I’ve never been solely dependent on [my music], so I’ve always had the luxury of taking my time and really putting things together. So when I drop, it’s always an event.” (The FADER)
