The Clipse's Pusha T recently opened up about former manager Anthony "Geezy" Gonzalez accepting a 32-year jail sentence for drug trafficking last year.
Pusha credits Gonzalez’s woes for motivating him to stick to music.
“My former manager’s and some good friends’ incarceration forced me to make the most of music. I don’t want their incarceration to be in vain. Now, there’s no way I could even speak to them like, ‘I’m home’–they’re like, ‘You’re home? And I’m here for the next tons of years? Come on, get it going.’ We owe our family and friends the opportunity to see something better materialize because everything with us went bad.” (Complex)
Last week, Clipse’s Malice also weighed in on the legal problems.
“The thing with Tony — it was so surreal,” Malice explained in an interview. “You always hear you’re going to end up dead or in jail if you sell drugs, but I don’t think any of us thought it would happen to our fam. I thought we knew something the rest of the world didn’t. Ironically, in a weird way though, I literally seen it about to happen…it was intuition I guess. We were all in Miami. Out of nowhere I ask my man Tony if he’s good. I told him it would break my heart if he were ever in jail. He reassured me he was good. Everything was fine. The whole crew went down the next day. Our homies were supposed to come back on a later flight than us, but they got word that the authorities were waiting for them at the airport. They never made it back to Virginia. At least not as free men.” (Village Voice)
Malice’s former manager was one of seven individuals indicted on multiple drug charges in April 2009.
The suspects include the owner of a former club that allegedly served as the drug ring’s base. They are charged with distributing more than a ton of marijuana and more than 100 pounds of cocaine. An unidentified police officer is listed in the indictment as a co-conspirator. According to the indictment, the officer fed information about the ongoing investigation to the club’s owner. In January 2010, Gonzalez came to terms with his three decade-long jail bid.
The sentence comes after Gonzales, 34, struck a deal with prosecutors in November. He was facing an 82-count indictment for drug trafficking and allegedly distributing more than 100 pounds of cocaine. During sentencing, a remorseful Gonzales said, “I just want to say that I’m sorry to my family and I’m sorry to the community.” Although Gonzales took full responsibility for the charges he was still sentenced to 32 years, which is the minimum sentence based off federal guidelines.
