Highway Renaming

The bill to rename the highway in Prince’s honor passed the Minnesota State House unanimously and is expected to be signed by Gov. Tim Walz. The highway renaming was voted 55-5 in favor by the Minnesota Senate.

The highway was chosen as it runs past Prince’s Paisley Park Museum and studios, where he passed away. In addition, purple signs will soon go up in the Minneapolis suburbs of Eden Prairie and Chanhassen, where the highway is located.

Prince’s Legacy

Prince was a highly successful artist, having sold over 100 million records worldwide and won seven Grammy Awards. In 2020, music streaming giant TIDAL honored Prince’s legacy on the fourth anniversary of his death. Also, in 2004, he was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Prince passed away on April 21, 2016, from an accidental fentanyl overdose.

Other Honored Late Artists

Prince is not the only late artist to be honored in their hometown. Notorious B.I.G. was recently honored in Brooklyn with a statue, while Young Dolph was honored with his day of service in Memphis, Tennessee. Additionally, Heavy D was also posthumously honored with a sculpture in Mount Vernon, New York.

Missy Elliott, another iconic artist, was recently honored by her hometown of Portsmouth, Virginia, with a street named after her.
