President Obama dished on the positives our country has experienced since he took office nearly seven years ago.

Obama trumpeted job growth and other signs of recovery from the ashes of the 2008 economic crisis while pitching a tax hike on the wealthy, new tax breaks for child care, and programs that include two free years of community college, lower interest rates on mortgage insurance and new requirements for paid sick leave. “The shadow of crisis has passed,” he said, “and the State of the Union is strong. The president also focused on international affairs.

Later, Mr. Obama promised a veto on stiffer Iran sanctions, saying that if Congress were to impose them right now, it would derail his diplomatic efforts to negotiate with Iran and alienate U.S. allies that are part of the tricky talks, which would make it easier for Iran to skate on obligations. “It doesn’t make sense,” the president said. “That is why I will veto any new sanctions bill that threatens to undo this progress.” (Washington Times)

President Obama placed some attention on dealing with Republican opposition.

While urging lawmakers to join him in pursuing a “better politics” in Washington, the president repeatedly antagonized congressional Republicans. He sprinkled his address with jabs at the “superrich” and the Keystone XL pipeline, and vowed to fight GOP bills that would chip away at ObamaCare, financial regulations and his recent immigration actions. “If a bill comes to my desk that tries to do any of these things, I will veto it,” Obama said. With an emphasis on helping the middle-class, President Obama also dished on the idea of free college education.

Tax proposals that would boost middle-class families were in the president’s speech; so were calls for a new approach to immigration and a push for free education at community colleges. Obama also called on Congress to pass a resolution to authorize using military force against the extremist group ISIS. (NPR)
