“Power” Star Lucy Walters Calls Holly A Survivor: “There’s A Lot Going On W/ Her”

[After Saturday’s shocking “Power” finale in the books, actress Lucy Walters talks to SOHH about how she approached going into this mind-blowing season.]

I think the first season was great but the second is even richer. I think that Holly is a part of that.

I think that coming into the second thing, I knew what that world was. I knew who Holly was in a secret way, she’s just more flushed out and so there’s more to work with.

I think the first season, people were focused on trying to see what they made of her. They knew they didn’t trust her but they didn’t know why. There was a lot of speculation on Twitter like, “Is she FBI? What is she? We know we don’t like her, but we don’t know why.”

I feel like now she’s so much more interesting than any of that. She’s flushed out and I have a better sense of who she is. I feel like I can take more risks with her and I think the writing has played a bigger part and I know and understand the world, and the character.

I think the other thing is that Holly wears a mask. I think there’s a lot going on with her. She’s an outspoken woman but she keeps that intact and the whole first season you see her taking in a lot of information and using that in a manipulative way, so the audience never got much insight on what’s going on in her mind.

I think that finally, this season, since we have more to go on, we’re able to see that yes, we see this intense vulnerability and passion and anger that’s just under the surface, it’s all there for her.

She’s a survivor and knows how to play it cool like, “It ain’t no thing,” when it really is.

I think we’re getting cracks into who she really is. It was all facades before and now you’re seeing it.

I think there’s something awesome. She was confronted with her own mortality, she was shot, that’s so huge. She never experienced real love and she finally got a taste of that with Tommy. That’s huge.

These are big cracks that sort of allow to have the inside component that we really didn’t get in the first season.
