Pharrell William’s Something In The Water festival is back and will happen on the Juneteenth holiday. However, the star-studded festival will no longer be in his Virginia Beach hometown, but in Washington D.C.

The Grammy award winner put out a statement on his decision to celebrate Juneteenth – the official day recognizing the independence of enslaved blacks – in the nation’s capital.

“We decided to take that solution to the highest platform we can find and that’s on our nation’s capital, the national mall right there on Independence Avenue on three stages and on Juneteenth weekend.”

The mayor of the nation’s capital Muriel Bowser also spoke on having the event come to D.C. in the summer.

“What we know we’re going to have is this excitement for three days in Washington D.C. on independence Avenue on Juneteenth which is a holiday not just in D.C. but in the United States.”

The star-studded lineup announced for the event includes Pusha T, 6LACK, T.I. Denzel Curry, BIA, Lucky Daye, and many more.  Meanwhile, “surprise guests” could include Tyler the Creator and Kanye West, who he’s recently collaborated with for Pusha T’s newest album.

Pharrell Says No To Virginia Beach

The location may have been due to his beef with Virginia Beach’s police department after a cop shot his cousin.

He referenced the “challenges” with Virginia Beach in his announcement, saying  “When we hit challenges, you can stop or go beyond it and onwards and upwards.”

Pharrell announced last year “Something In The Water” will not return to Virginia Beach in 2022, and possibly ever again. He sent a letter to the city’s government, citing disapproval of their action in the wake of his cousin’s death at the hands of police officers in March 2021.

The superproducer has had other problems doing business with his hometown.  Pharrell and Dave Chappelle faced roadblocks after a Virginia Beach businessman turned down William’s plan to hold an event featuring Dave Chappelle at the historic Cavalier Hotel. However, Pharrell and his event organizers remained unfazed saying, “We’ve already moved on.”
