Local rap stars helped ignite the night for ‘Kast fans with opening performances at Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park.

A trio of acclaimed Atlanta acts, all indebted the to Outkast in their own unique ways, opened the event. Janelle Monae started off with a bombastic set dedicated to “artists who came before us, like Outkast, who opened up the doors for creative young black people, who those who opened up doors for people in this country.” Atlanta rappers 2 Chainz and Future (a last-minute addition when a root canal forced Solange to cancel) both expressed their similar reverence. The OutKast duo killed it last night with these classic hits…

Rap veteran Bun B also added his signature touch to the event while Three Stacks and Big Boi performed handfuls of notable hits.

With a large live band – including unstoppable drummer Omar Phillips – and backup singers, Big Boi and Andre 3000 adroitly re-created more than two dozen songs from their catalog. They detoured for solo turns in the spotlight — a frenzied, bounce-inducing “Kryptonite (I’m On It)” from Big Boi and a spirited version of “Hey Ya” from Andre 3000 that he actually seemed to enjoy performing – but spent most of the show at each other’s sides, just as fans want. Recently, Andre 300 dismissed rumors about an OutKast reunion album coming together.

“There are no plans to do [an Outkast album]. It’s not like some people think: ‘They’re about to drop this album!’ We don’t have, like, one song. There’s no trickery or nothing like that,” Andre explained in an interview. “It’s kind of like growing up in a house with your brother, people expecting y’all to live in the same room and have bunk beds forever. And people try to read into it and say people are beefing. But it’s nothing like that, man. Big Boi will always be my brother and a really important part of my life.” (Billboard)

Recently, Andre talked about what an OutKast biopic would look like.

Rapper Andre Benjamin worked obsessively on his startling portrayal of Jimi Hendrix in the new film Jimi: All Is By My Side, and he already has ideas about a potential biopic for his group Outkast. “It would be great to make an Outkast movie right now, but instead of really serious, make it a full comedy  — like Kevin Hart would play Big Boi,” he said of his rapping partner last night. And as himself? “We should cast somebody stupid — like Leonardo [DiCaprio].” (Rolling Stone)
