The film, produced by Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Productions and directed by Academy Award nominee Reginald Hudlin, touches on the late great’s life before immigrating to the United States and his storied career in the entertainment industry.
Many luminaries inspired by him, including Lenny Kravitz, Denzel Washington, and Spike Lee, are featured in the trailer providing context to how he lived and broke barriers in Hollywood.
For his performance in Lillies of the Field, he won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1964, making him the first black man to win the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Poitier’s social activism is also shown as he served as a director during the height of the Civil Rights Movement.
The actor was present during the March on Washington and when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Poitier was a larger-than-life figure both on and off-screen.
Lenny said it best when he stated, “He came to this Earth to move it, to change it, to shake it.”
The documentary is set to premiere on Apple TV+ on September 23rd.
