The Old, Not New Atlanta

Rising rapper Omeretta the Great’s latest song, “Sorry, Not Sorry,” draws clear distinctions as to what really counts as “Atlanta.”  Along the way, she’s ruffled plenty of feathers across the nation.

Omeretta’s new music video and song seek to set the record straight about what does and doesn’t count as “Atlanta.”   In the video, shot in the Atlanta Braves Trust Stadium parking lot in Cobb County, the rising rapper boldly confronts the places that are  “not” Atlanta – and throws subliminals at the people who fake-rep The A.

According to Omeretta’s native ATL credentials, places such as College Park, Lithonia, Forest Park, Lilburn, Roswell, and Decatur are NOT Atlanta.  And while Omeretta doesn’t call out specific rappers, she does call a fake on those who are from certain areas outside of Atlanta who rep as Atlantans but are actually not native. (She’s talking to you, Quando Rondo from Savannah,  Playboy Carti from Riverdale, Offset & Takeoff from Lawrenceville, Lil Yachty from Mableton, and Childish Gambino from Stone Mountain).

“I’m talking about the 1, the 3 and the 4,” she raps, a reference to three out of the six Atlanta Police Department zones, all of which are on the Southside and heavily African American. “The old, not the new Atlanta,” she also raps, implying that she’s also taking a jab at the gentrification of Atlanta as well.

Her song has sparked a conversation nationwide in other big cities such as New York and Chicago, with native rappers from those cities doing their own versions and defining who can claim their towns.

Rising rapper Omeretta The Great was trending on social media after she released photos of six separate tattoos of her boyfriend’s name all over her body.  For those who don’t know the Georgia peach, here are five things to bring you up to speed about Omeretta  – and why she tattooed her boo’s name all over.
