According to ODB’s ex-manager Jarred Weisfeld, millions in possible profits were lost by the widow rushing a deal.

The widow of rapper Ol’ Dirty Bastard hawked his prized final album for a song. So says Weisfeld who claims Icelene Jones quietly signed away the rights to “A Son Unique,” the singer’s posthumously- released album, and spent the proceeds. “She sold out for peanuts,” said Weisfeld, who said he was told the price was as little as $10,000. Weisfeld believed that the album could have brought in millions for ODB’s survivors, who include his mother, Cherry Jones, and four baby mamas who bore his children. Family members and Weisfeld have squared off in Brooklyn Surrogate Court, for control over what’s left of his career earnings. Icelene Jones did not return calls. (New York Post)

Prior to being shelved, the album was given an iTunes release in November 2009.

A Son Unique was recorded before ODB died. The album was originally to be released on August 9, 2005, but had numerous delays. It was to be released on November 7, 2006 to commemorate the anniversary of ODB’s death, which occurred on November 13, 2004, but was delayed again. On the day of its planned release, A Son Unique was available on the popular music downloading service iTunes. The release was eventually canceled by ODB’s label, Roc-a-Fella Records. (Wikipedia)

In 2004, ODB passed away from medical complications.

In 2003 ODB was released from jail and quickly signed to Roc-a-Fella Records. The following year found him working on a new album, work that ended suddenly when ODB collapsed in a recording studio and died shortly thereafter. (All Music)

After his death, Icelene gained control of ODB’s estate.

The New York Daily News reports Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s widow, Icelene Jones, was able to come up with a marriage certificate dated July 25, 1991, so a judge put her in charge of his estate. Now ODB’s mother Cherry Jones is worried four of the Wu-Tang Clan rapper’s out-of-wedlock children by four other women will be iced out. “Since Icelene now has the authority … we hope that they will come forward to reveal his assets. We are about to commence a discovery proceeding,” Icelene’s lawyer, Darryl Nicholas, said. (Rap Dirt)
