[O’dell was part of the legendary No Limit Records production team, Beats by the Pound, which helped the legendary label ran by Master P go on to sell 75-plus million records. During this rare interview, he spoke about the No Limit days, reflected on fallen soldiers such as Soulja Slim and the final days of No Limit Records.]

1. Beats By The Pound’s Chemistry

We are brothers and it is still that way. That connection is always there. Everybody kind of naturally fell into their space. We get in where we fit in and no ego in there. We were at Rap-A-Lot and J-Prince was watching us work and he said “I’m trippin’ that there ain’t no ego!” I was always bringing strings, Craig-B was always bringing funk, Mo B Dick was always bring something, and KLC was always hitting with some kicks and drum patterns. We all love music man and it shows.

2. Remembering Soulja Slim

Slim is like New Orleans hip-hop royalty still. Actually I met BG being at Cash Money first and I didn’t realize how much BG was like Slim. Slim always called him my little brother. The dude liked to work, easy to work with and get along with. He always had some great ideas. Not too long before he passed he was at Medicine Men Studios and we were sitting in there and he gave me a concept and told me I was the only one to do this beat, and I still haven’t told anyone what the concept was. I am holding onto it because he gave me the idea and out of respect I don’t want to give it out.

3. Starting W/ Cash Money Before No Limit

Actually I hooked up with Cash Money first. I was doing keys for Mannie Fresh. I was the in house musician that played on a lot of his stuff. Birdman would pick me up and I would play a lot of stuff. Most people remember me from the “Drag’em in the River” track. I didn’t produce it, Fresh produced it but I played the music. Back then I didn’t know how to sequence so I had to play the parts all the way through. I will always give them guys credit because I wasn’t in the studio until I met Fresh, Baby, and Slim. From there I met Mia-X and I was called up to No Limit Records to sing a hook for Mia. She told me to put some stuff together, so I put about 3 beats together for P and I was on in from there on.

4. Thoughts On C-Murder & Mac

I don’t know what’s going on there. I knew Mac long before I was with No Limit and when he went in I couldn’t shake that because for a long time it was messing with me. We talked a few times and I have a lot of old Mac music that we haven’t released. I haven’t spoken to C-Murder in a long time, but if I’m asked to make something for C-Murder of Mac I’m making it. It pains me knowing that they are locked up like that. I don’t know all the specifics or any of that but it bothers me that they are locked up.

5. No Limit Records Split

Overall all that really happened was a communication breakdown. That happens in almost any relationship. Without putting anybody on blast because I have no desire to see anybody from No Limit not make it, and I don’t care if I’m talking to you every day or Im not talking to you again. That family, that team, I’m happy for anybody on that team It all came down to a communication breakdown. We all run into each other and we still talk. It did what it did but it was a noticeable change and it hurt us all because we had something special going and then it was no more.
