Rap fans are going to have to wait a little longer than expected to see an upcoming Johnny Depp-starring film about the unsolved murders of Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac. New reports claim City of Lies no longer has a release date.

According to reports, the hip-hop film has had its originally scheduled early September debut date removed.

The film was set to be released in North America by Global Road Entertainment on Sept. 7 and no new release date has been set. The studio chose to put the movie on hold as marketing such a film with Johnny Depp as a star would be a challenge right now, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap. The thriller looks at the murder of The Notorious B.I.G. shortly after the death of Tupac. Depp’s character, disgraced LAPD Detective Russell Poole has spent years trying to solve the crime, while Jackson (played by Forest Whitaker) is a reporter desperate for answers. (TheWrap)

Last month, reports emerged about Depp catching an assault lawsuit by the film’s location manager.

The actor allegedly hit Gregg “Rocky” Brooks repeatedly on April 13, 2017 after being informed that DTLA filming on the Brad Furman helmed pic about the LAPD investigation into the 1997 murder of the Notorious B.I.G. was going to have to wrap up late that night. Hesitant to approach Depp after Furman told him to, the vet location manager went to speak instead to the on-set off duty LAPD officer about the matter. That conversation was seemingly cut short when the apparently booze on the breath Pirates of the Caribbean star supposedly start screaming obscenities at Brooks and proceeded to strike him “twice in the lower left side of his rib cage and causing pain.” (Deadline)

Back in May, the must-see flick’s trailer premiered online.
