Nicki Minaj’s “Massive Attack” Producer Takes On Criticism, “I Think It May Have Been Too Different”

Nicki Minaj's "Massive Attack" producer, Alex da Kid, has responded to the song's lukewarm reception.

Alex cited his interest in creating original and different sounds as motivation behind Minaj’s single.

“My whole thing [is that] I don’t want to do anything that’s the same as what’s out there,” he said in an interview. “I think [‘Massive Attack’] may have been too different. If we would’ve put a big feature on it, like a Kanye or Rihanna or someone, I think it might’ve done a bit better. It needed something familiar about it.” (Rap-Up)

“Massive Attack” guest feature Sean Garrett recently addressed the record’s haters.

“‘Massive Attack’ is a stupid record, but everybody is so set on doing the same thing all the time, but they say they want something new, then you give them something new and they’re not ready for it,” Garrett said in an interview last April. “People just need some time for this to sink into their veins. I knew [the negative feedback] was going to happen. I go through that with every record. I went through that with ‘Yeah!’ and ‘Break Up.’ It’s common to me.” (VIBE)

Minaj recorded a “Massive Attack” music video featuring Amber Rose and Baby cameos earlier this year.

“I brought my BFF Amber Rose out here,” Nicki said in an interview. “This is a massive attack. We shot the helicopter scene. Obviously, I had to have a hot-pink Lamborghini. We’re having fun in the car, and we see a freakin’ helicopter chase us. So we get on the walkie-talkie, like, ‘Mayday! Mayday!’ It’s really fashion and beauty shots, and we’re acting like we’re doing something important…You can expect it to be almost like the soundtrack to a movie. It’s gonna take you somewhere that … it’s kinda gonna tell a story. I didn’t just want to make an album that had a club record, just the obvious. I wanted to paint a very graphic picture. And every record that I’m doing for the album, I can see the stage show, I can see the video. It’s just gonna be big. You can expect it to be big.” (MTV)

She was also sued for damaging the music video’s rented pink Lamborghini.

The plaintiff, Hollywood Exotic Car Rental, claims Minaj agreed to rent a 2008 Lamborghini Murcielago — at the rate of $1,750 a day — to shoot her “Massive Attack” music video. But according to the suit — filed today in L.A. County Superior Court — the exotic car was driven “off-road” and damaged “in the approximate amount of $11,589.41.” Plus, they allege, Minaj didn’t pay three days rent on the car — that’s another $5,250. The rental company is suing for unpaid rental charges, property damage, and punitive damage. (TMZ)
