Young Money's Nicki Minaj has all of the attention on her following dicey comments she shot at fellow female competition during her BET Awards acceptance speech last night (June 29) in Los Angeles. #NickiWroteIt
After being called up for her “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist” award, Minaj did not hold back with her speech.
“This is my fifth year winning this award. I don’t take it for granted,” Nicki says when accepting the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. “When you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it. No, no shade… no shade,” she continued, silencing rumors of her not writing her own rhymes.” (BET Awards)
She also used the opportunity to discuss experiencing a near-death moment.
“The other day – I didn’t tell anybody this – I really thought I was going to die. I was saying my prayers to die. I didn’t even want to call an ambulance, because I thought, ‘Well if I call the ambulance, it’s going to be on TMZ… I would rather sit there and die,” she said. “And it made me realize: I don’t care anymore what anybody got to say, I’mma do me.” (BET Awards)
Some media outlets suggest Nicki intentionally targeted Hustle Gang rapper Iggy Azalea.
Azalea, whose song “Fancy” has been the number one song on Billboard’s Hot 100 since June 7 (she’s spent 16 weeks on the chart) has been criticized as inauthentic for the accent she adopts to perform — some have gone as far as saying she stole Charli Baltimore‘s flow — but Minaj implying that Azalea doesn’t even write her own rhymes would make Azalea the prevailing Wizard of Oz of hip hop. Minaj basically stood up and said live, on national television, that Azalea’s act is nothing but a charade. it certainly casts doubt on the assertion Azalea spits in the very first line of “Fancy:” “First things first, I’m the realest.” (Washington Post)
Aside from the speech drama, Minaj treated viewers to a performance.
Usher referenced his 20-year career with a medley of his hits, Minaj performed “Pills N’ Potions” on a stage with giant psychedelic mushrooms and R&B star Chris Brown joined Lil Wayne to perform “Loyal”. (Chicago Tribune)
