Despite the media perception and a recent denial, Minaj admitted her remarks had less to do with Hustle Gang’s Iggy Azalea and more on the state of female musicians.

By the time of our interview, Nicki has clearly spent some time thinking about the speech, and she’s got her spiel prepared. “My point of saying what I said was that women need to have a perspective,” she starts off. “If we’re out here saying that we’re so confident, and we’re so this and so that, but we don’t even trust ourselves to write down our own thoughts and spit it on a beat?” She’s getting ignited, her volume picking up. “It just doesn’t add up.” Then she launches into a verbal love letter to The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill: “I knew those were Lauryn’s words, and it made me fall in love with her mind.” (The FADER)

Although Iggy appeared to downplay the hype, her NBA boyfriend Nick Young recently admitted she had some issues following last month’s ESPY’s awards ceremony.

“Oh man! You know, it is what it is,” Young told reporters at the party this week. “I had to deal with the aftermath when she came home. … When she got home and was going through her phone and hearing all the things and people talking trash about her, you know I had to be there for her. … But you know what, Iggy is doing big things and its scaring a lot of people!” (Us Magazine)

Nicki waited nearly 72 hours to speak out on being labeled the agitator following the awards ceremony.

“The media puts words in my mouth all the time and this is no different. I will always take a stance on women writing b/c I believe in us!,” Nicki tweeted July 2.

“I believe we’re smart enough to write down our own thoughts and perspective, just like the men do. I’ve been saying this for 5 YEARS”

“I fell in love with Lauryn Hill b/c I knew she was the author behind those amazingly profound and articulated songs on the MisEducation”

“I wondered how Lauryn tapped into my brain and wrote an album on love, betrayal, passion, pain, triumph, brokenness…. Did she read minds?”

“It’s the same reason I have a different level of respect for Missy. I know she’s a writer and a producer. Women MUST aspire for more”

“I’ve congratulated Iggy on the success of Fancy, publicly. She should be very proud of that. All the women nominated should b proud.”

“That will never change my desire to motivate women to write. Our voices have to be heard. I hope I inspire up & coming females to do that.” (Nicki Minaj’s Twitter)

After being called up for her “Best Female Hip-Hop Artist” award, Minaj appeared to shoot out some dicey words toward Iggy.

“This is my fifth year winning this award. I don’t take it for granted,” Nicki says when accepting the award for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist. “When you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it. No, no shade… no shade,” she continued, silencing rumors of her not writing her own rhymes.” (BET Awards)
