NFL star Jurrell Casey is going to need a little more than a fine to stop him from protesting during the national anthem. The Tennessee Titans star has promised to exercise his rights once football season starts back up.

In a new interview, Casey announced his intent to accept a penalty in exchange for protesting the flag.

“I’m going to take a fine this year, why not?” said Casey at an NFL promotional event in London. “I’m going to protest during the flag. That’s what I’m going to say now.” Casey, coming off three straight Pro-Bowl appearances with the Titans, is the most prominent player so far to state his intention to flout the new NFL rules which dictate that players must either “stand and show respect for the flag and the anthem” or remain out of public view in the locker room. Titans president and CEO Steve Underwood has since addressed Casey’s comments.

“In the case of Jurrell Casey, I think our head coach (Mike Vrabel) and general manager (Jon Robinson) are interested in having a conversation after he gets back from the United Kingdom,” Underwood said. “We think there may be some misunderstanding on his part. Because the new league policy does not provide anywhere that fines are made against players. If a player doesn’t stand, the teams can be fined, but not the players. There are two things that can happen that are considered to be legitimate under the policy: stay in the locker room or you can stand respectfully during the anthem. And it doesn’t apply just to the players; it applies to every employee of ours.” (USA Today)

A few weeks ago, rap star T.I. explained his disinterest in supporting the NFL in light of its policy to force players to stand for the national anthem.

In May, various hip-hop artists shared their disgust in the NFL forcing players to stand during the national anthem.
