Kanye’s Movie Originally 8 Hours Long

The four-and-a-half-hour movie jumps in with Kanye playing beats for Mos Def and Talib Kweli—Black Star—in his car; bursting into random people’s offices at Roc-A-Fella to play a demo of “All Falls Down”; getting rejected repeatedly by labels, including Roc-A-Fella that strung him along for years as a producer only; using $33,000 of his own money to bankroll the breakthrough hit “Through the Wire” music video; and watching Pharrell flee the studio with glee after hearing it for the first time – declaring Kanye the “next big thing.”

“Even though he was standing so close to his dreams, it still felt so far away,” says director and Kanye friend, Coodie, who narrates the doc and has documented Kanye for over 10 years.

Kanye West Wants To Edit NetFlix’s “Jeen-Yuhs”

“Jeen-Yuhs” will debut in theaters on February 10 and on February 16 on Netflix. However, some viewers got a taste of the three-part film at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23.

The docuseries tracks Ye’s journey from hustling on the streets of Chicago till the present, with over 330 hours of footage.  The movie was cut from 8 hours to 4 hours.

The series – which took almost a decade to make due to Kanye’s fluid lifestyle  – shows the good, bad, and the ugly: when Ye was playing beats for Talib Kweli and Mos Def, him using his own money to fund the “Through The Wire” video because Roc-A-Fella Records wouldn’t, Pharrell declaring him the next best thing after hearing “Through The Wire” in the studio, the death of his mother and his recent manic episodes and emotional breakdowns.

“We just put it all together ourselves and later on showed Kanye the sizzle of what we were doing,” Coodie shared.

Recently, Ye demanded to get the final edit and approval on this doc before it releases on Netflix.
