[After recently joining forces with Nas' Mass Appeal Records, Harlem rapper Dave East talks to SOHH readers about his relationship with Smoke DZA, respect for Dipset and reaction to Ma$e's hip-hop comeback.]
Honestly, [Smoke DZA and my] relationship really came about from the respect of our music. I was coming up and doing my thing. I’m from the west side of Harlem and he’s from the east side. He saw me coming up and he respected the music. When I finally came up, we clicked. He’s like my older brother. That’s just the big homie. I really got love for Smoke DZA.
I always looked up to Cam’ron. Cam used to always come through my block. Killa, early Big L, I was young when Big L was really running Harlem. That whole Children of the Corn came from my hood. That whole movement just put what I’m trying to do in second gear. I feel I got to keep the music up.
I am a fan of Ma$e. Harlem World is actually the first album I ever bought. I’ve always had love for what Ma$e brought to the game. I just don’t know. From the outside looking in, it looks like a lot of confusion. He’s dope. He’s one of the hottest people to come out of Harlem.
Who??
