Rap veteran Nas – the legend behind hip-hop classic Illmatic – has been one of the top faces in the game for almost three decades now, having began his career in 1991. Nas is commonly regarded as one of the best rappers to ever walk the planet, and his legacy is nearly unmatched.

Also a big figure outside of music, he has made headlines in many other ventures – for reasons better or worse. Recently, ex-wife Kelis made claims of physical and mental abuse during their relationship. In light of the accusations, here are 5 Things You (Probably) Didn’t Know about Nas and Kelis’ marriage.

1. Their Relationship Is Old News

In 2003, he and R&B singer Kelis began the relationship. They tied the knot in 2005, making national headlines. Their marriage was short-lived, though and just 4 years later Kelis filed for divorce. A spokesperson recalled her reasoning as “irreconcilable differences”, and the divorce was finalized in May of 2010. Why these abuse allegations were just made public now is unknown, and is somewhat peculiar considering their relationship ended almost a decade ago now.
