Rap veteran Nas‘ popular “The Get Down” Netflix series isn’t coming back for a second season. Reports claim the streaming giant has pulled the plug on the hip-hop show.

According to reports, the show received its pink slip after just one season.

Netflix has canceled Baz Luhrmann’s “The Get Down” after one season. The cancellation brings an official end to a series that was plagued by behind-the-scenes troubles and failed to connect with viewers in the ways that buzzy Netflix hits such as “Stranger Things” and “Orange is the New Black” have. Season one premiered in two parts, with the second part debuting on the streaming service in April to little fanfare. (Variety)

The show’s creator Baz Luhrmann has since issued an open Facebook statement to all “Get Down” viewers.

The series reportedly turned into Netflix’s most expensive show production to date.

The show – an extravagant US$120m retelling of the founding of hip-hop, executive produced by Grandmaster Flash and narrated by the rapper Nas – was plagued by a revolving door of crew and beset by a series of delays. By the time it premiered in August 2017, to a polarised critical reception, it had become the most expensive series in Netflix’s history; but when part two debuted in April, the buzz had largely died down. Nas’ presence on “The Get Down” is felt throughout as the show’s narrator.

Nas executive-produces the Baz Luhrmann-created musical-drama, which follows a group of teenagers as disco and rap flourish in late Seventies South Bronx. The hip-hop icon also “narrates” the show as the adult rap voice of protagonist Ezekiel “Zeke” Figuero. (Rolling Stone)
