According to reports, Womack’s life came to an unexpected end last night (June 27).

Bobby Womack, who spanned the American soul music era, touring as a gospel singer in the 1950s, playing guitar in Sam Cooke‘s backup band in the early ’60s, writing hit songs recorded by Wilson Pickett and the Rolling Stones and composing music that broke onto the pop charts, has died, a spokeswoman for his record label said on Friday night. The iconic singer’s publicist also confirmed his passing.

Legendary soul singer Bobby Womack died Friday, Womack’s publicist said. He was 70. “I am sadly able to confirm but I have no details at this time,” said Sonya Kolowrat, his publicist with XL Recordings. (CNN)

Last year, Bobby discussed his early battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

“With the support of many good doctors, my family, and all of my wonderful fans, I will continue to write and perform and bring the good music to the people for as long as I can,” Womack told CNN after his diagnosis. (CNN)

Back in November, rap star Rick Ross shouted out Womack for his involvement on a song.
