Sooner than later, Atlanta rapper Mulatto will be going by a new name. Her controversial moniker has ruffled feathers for years, but now the 21-year-old says she's matured and is going over ideas for a different stage name.
Mulatto Soon Won’t Be Mulatto
Ever since she surfaced on the mainstream radar as a teenager on VH1’s “The Rap Game” reality show, Mulatto has taken heat for her name, which hearkens back to American slavery. The artist born Alyssa Stephens said after giving it more thought, “You’ve got to self-reflect and go back to the drawing board.”
“The older I get, you know, just the state of the world right now … I was out on the front line marching for victims of police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement as a whole. To me, you get to a point where [the name] is not worth it anymore. … Your intention is kind of being misinterpreted. So it’s like you’ve got to self-reflect and go back to the drawing board. I don’t know my final decision yet, but I’m definitely at the drawing board right now for sure.” (HNHH)
Mulatto Had Been Debating A Name Change
Earlier this month, the Queen Of Da Souf did another interview in which she said she was considering changing her name. But now it seems more like a matter of “when” rather than “if.”
“I can’t say too much because we’re working on something right now, but I would be lying to say it hasn’t crossed my mind before. It is a controversy that I hear and see every day as far as my name goes, so I would be lying to say no I never thought of that. But I can’t say too much because right now, it’s going to be a part of something bigger.”
Fans Calling For Mulatto To Make A Change
In what has been her breakout year as an artist, the issue over Mulatto’s stage name has in some ways distracted from her success. Fans on social media have been calling for the rapper to make a change.
