[Philadelphia’s own Ms. Jade recently sat down with hip-hop personality and SOHH correspondent Shawn Setaro on his popular “The Cipher” podcast. Listen to the full interview and check out five gems she dropped during the Q&A.]
On working with Timbaland:
“He would come get me from my hotel room and say, ‘If you can get this flow, I’ll give you $300.’ He was giving me tests on how to get the flow right.”
On what makes Philadelphia rappers distinctive:
“Philly rap to me is the rawness and the pureness. It comes from hunger and struggle and hate.”
On singing:
“I was always the kid who wanted to sing in talent shows. I thought I was going to be a singer before I thought I was going to be a rapper.”
On Big Daddy Kane:
“Kane gives you the same aura Jay Z does. Like a commanding, chill, boss type of aura. Kane just always stuck out to me. He was a showman, but still smooth. That resonated with me.”
On jealousy”
“I remember I had a Hummer, and I came outside and all four of my tires were slashed. People felt some kind of way, because there were people that were doing it longer than me. They felt like I didn’t deserve it.”
