[With his “Dying To Live” still heating up the mixtape circuit, hip-hop newcomer MistaRogers talks to SOHH about hooking up with Atlanta producer DJ Drama for the release.]
Before I started releasing music, I had a company that was throwing events in the Bay Area. I had been throwing events and DJ Drama was one of the people who we booked often.
We developed a relationship, initially, off of that and eventually I started letting him hear my music and he happened to f*ck with it.
That kind of created our relationship. I kept pushing it and it was one of those things where I’m a new artist and I want to break myself. So you have to keep trying until the people around you start respecting what you’re doing.
DJ Drama was one of the first people, to me, was important to me and got behind it from the early stages. He wanted to host the mixtape.
Looking at it like that, I’ve been listening to Drama on those Gangsta Grillz mixtapes for as long as I can remember. So for me to have a Gangsta Grillz mixtape was a very good look for me.
I wanted to put my best foot forward and I believe a Gangsta Grillz mixtape was my best foot forward.
