[With the recent release of his “Another Time” album, Miami mixtape legend DJ EFN gives SOHH readers an update on his Crazy Hood label and brand.]

I started Crazy Hood Productions right out of high school. It was 1993. I only had a few years in the game and originally it was just me putting out mixtapes at that time and trying to manage artists.

I didn’t exactly know where I was going to go. Mixtapes seemed like the easiest route for me to take. So that’s what I did and it helped me progress the company in terms of branding.

I managed artists and had a clothing store in the mid to late ‘90’s but really what the main thing is that we do is manage. We manage ¡Mayday! who is with Tech N9ne. We manage him and also manage producers.

Besides management, we also do marketing. We’ve done that for about 15 years as well. We’ve done marketing for almost every single record label and worked with brands like Coca-Cola, Bacardi, you name it.

As of recently, we’ve been getting into films. We started this other branch of the company called Crazy Hood Productions Film Academy and we currently have a documentary series in production. We have one right now that’s running on [music mogul Diddy’s] Revolt TV.

It’s called “Coming Home” and it’s a documentary about myself and my artist Garcia. We travel to Cuba which is our parents’ homeland.

We had never been there so we explore the country through a hip-hop perspective and culture. We met hip-hop heads out there. We got back and it won some festival awards. Then it got picked up by Revolt.

I got an idea to travel to other countries and the best way to explain it is Anthony Bourdain but hip-hop.

Revolt just picked up the next two films. The next one is called “Coming Home: Peru” and then “Coming Home: Haiti.”

We plan on going to other countries this year as well. We’re also doing films and music videos.
